The Andover Births and Deaths from 1795 to 1891 were transcribed from the
original Vital Records which were hand-written in a journal kept by various
town clerks over the years. Current Andover Town Clerk Phyllis Spaulding
and her Assistant Elaine Morton did the transcription during the winter and
spring of 1998. The journal page number (in italics) where the records
appear immediately follows the vital records for that family. If sources
other than the vital records are used that source will also appear in italics
immediately after the last applicable name.
It should be noted that these records do not include every birth and death that incurred in Andover. Some births and deaths may have not been recorded, some births and deaths may have been recorded in other towns, and some records may have been lost or misplaced over the past 200 years. Also, some births and deaths that incurred in other towns, states, and even Canada were recorded, some as early as 1788. In the interest of maintaining historical integrity, Andover births and deaths were transcribed verbatim. However, be advised that some of the hand-written records were very difficult to read and may have been misinterpreted.
The birth of the first white child born in Andover, Susan Merrill, daughter of first settlers Ezekiel and Sarah Merrill was born on July 13, 1790 and her birth was apparently not recorded. Mrs. Merrill was believed to have been assisted in labor by Mollocket, a local Indian woman who died in Andover on August 2, 1816. Although Mollocket is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, her death was not recorded either. We have included these two important people even though they do not appear in the official records.
Most of the deaths reported here were buried in one of the three cemeteries in Andover -- Woodlawn, Farmers Hill, or North Surplus.
Additionally, some births and deaths from the 1860's through 1891 appear
to be missing. The Births and deaths from 1892 forward are contained in other
files on this site. The births and deaths are reported in alphabetical order
by surname, and further refined by the given name of the father in bold
type for easy finding. Where there is more than one father with
the same given name, they are reported in chronological order. The deaths
are generally reported immediately after the births. The relationship between
the birth family and the person whose death was reported at the end of that
family is not always clear.
